#Staroftheweek: Mahesh Manjrekar: I want the right audience to watch my films | Marathi Movie News

Actor-director Mahesh Manjrekar is one of the most revered names in the Marathi film industry, who has earned name, fame and love from the audience through his phenomenal films.

In our fifth edition of #Staroftheweek, ETimes caught up with him to discuss his film “Nay Varan Bhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha”, his anticipation for the film and much more.

What do you have to say about the making of ‘Nay Varan Bhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha’?

People say ‘Vaastav’ is a punchy movie but I think ‘Lalbaug Parel’ was a more punchy movie than ‘Vaastav’. ‘Lalbaug Parel’ was based on the famous play ‘Adhantar’ by author Jayant Pawar. He also wrote a story of ‘Nay Varan Bhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha’ and it was very disturbing when I first heard it. So we decided to make a movie with the same title.

Keep on going..

When we wrote this film, it was clear that we are not going to romanticize things. If the boys of this era use such abusive words, why not show it for what it is. So we decided to do it that way. I appreciate that the censorship committee had a fairly liberal view of this film. It’s a dark movie and I can only say that if you are used to seeing such dark movies only come to the cinema. I want the right audience to watch my films.

How did you manage to convince Prem Dharamadhikari and Varad Nagwekar?

It was very difficult and they were only 16 years old. It was an extremely difficult task to cast these two boys. I know Prem Dharamadhikari because of my film “Bhai: Vyakti Ki Valli” where he played Bal Thackeray, a school boy. After that, he did a Hindi web series and movie “Antim: The Final Truth” with me.

There has been a sudden increase in COVID-19 cases over the past two days and you released Nay Varan Bhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha’…

We wanted to release this movie on January 21st. Due to a sudden spike in COVID-19 cases, all cinemas were closed and it was obvious that Hindi filmmakers will not take the chance to release their film during this time. So we decided to release our Marathi movie on January 14th.

How do you reconcile your acting and directing careers?

To be honest, I focus more on directing than acting. Because I get good roles these days. And that’s why I envy Pankaj Tripathi because he offered very good roles. So I’m not interested in doing small roles.

According to our sources, you made “Nay Varan Bhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha” at breakneck speed. Is it true?

Yes, we made this film at breakneck speed. I’m not allowed to reveal the length but all I can say is that ‘Nay Varan Bhat Loncha Kon Nay Koncha’ is the fastest film of my career. We wrote this 7 years ago and we had little time before ‘Antim’. So we did. It is very sad that Jayant Pawar is not with us today to see this film. I really like Jayant’s work for his way of observing things. We also wanted a film about the history of the mills from Mumbai to the malls. I will definitely make this movie as a tribute to Jayant Pawar.
