Starbucks plans to open a new drive-thru near downtown Stockport

Starbucks plans to open a new drive-thru near downtown Stockport. The coffee giant has submitted proposals for a new outlet to replace Pizza Hut, in Garfield Court near Great Portwood Street.

The application seeks permission to install a new drive-thru lane at the restaurant – located opposite the Peel Center – which currently offers dine-in and take-out options. Documents filed with the council confirm the planned ‘Pizza Hut restaurant removal’, as opposed to a drive-thru that runs alongside it.

Some demolition will be required to allow construction of the new lane, although part of the building will be retained to provide a covered area above the drive-thru facility. The proposal would create 20 full-time equivalent jobs.

A transport report submitted with the application indicates that the proposal would bring a number of benefits to the region, without significantly increasing traffic.

It reads: ‘The proposed redevelopment of the existing restaurant to provide a drive-thru cafe would provide updated and more convenient facilities for users in the surrounding retail areas and in itself would not result in a significant amount of movement additional vehicles on the local motorway network.

In conclusion, he adds: “There are no exceptional reasons why the proposed redevelopment should not be granted planning permission for transportation reasons.”

As part of the redevelopment, 12 parking spaces will be removed in Garfield Court, leaving 52 spaces. According to the transport report, this would be “sufficient” to meet the demands of the drive-thru and adjacent business units.

Another assessment is said to demonstrate “that the largest planned service vehicle as well as a large family car can be comfortably accommodated at the site”.

He adds that the site is “very accessible” by public transport and on foot “which would help encourage access by sustainable modes for staff and customers”.

A Starbucks spokesperson said: “We are always looking for new locations and opportunities to bring the Starbucks experience to UK customers, but at this time we do not have any updates to share on the plans in Stockport.”

Pizza Hut declined to comment.

Stockport Council will decide whether to grant planning permission for the project.
