Shooting near national park again highlights another weekend of gun violence in the United States

Other shootings injured children, including a one-year-old injured Saturday night in Philadelphia. They reinforce the trend of increased gun violence that emerged after the Covid-19 lockdowns were lifted.

According to preliminary FBI findings for 2020, the number of murders increased by 25% between 2019 and 2020 – the largest increase recorded in the United States in a year since the FBI began publishing annual figures in the 1960s. The findings of the National Commission on Covid-19 and Criminal Justice were similar, citing a 30% increase in the homicide rate between 2019 and 2020 in the 34 major cities surveyed.

Here’s a look at some of the weekend shooting incidents spread across the United States.

At least 53 people were shot dead in 41 separate shootings in Chicago from Friday night to Sunday night, according to police department incident reports. Of the 53, six have died, according to reports.

An 8-year-old child is among those injured after being shot dead early Sunday morning while driving in a car. The police report says that around 1 a.m. local time, an SUV drove by and shot at the car the child was in.

The victim has a gunshot wound to his leg and is in good condition, the report said. A man in the vehicle was also shot and released from the hospital.

On Saturday night, five female victims aged 12 to 19 were injured in a shooting outside a party, Chicago police said.

“The victims were standing with a group on the sidewalk and attending a party when the occupants of a dark-colored SUV fired shots,” the police department said. All victims are in fair condition.

A 25-year-old man was also shot dead in the incident, Chicago police said. He was treated and released from the hospital.

There were no arrests in these two shootings, according to incident reports.

Philadelphia cream

Two people were injured, including a 1-year-old boy, in a shootout in west Philadelphia on Saturday night around 8 p.m., according to Philadelphia Police Department spokesman Officer Miguel Torres.

The one-year-old was shot in the left leg and taken to Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, where police said he was listed in stable condition. The second individual, a 26-year-old man, was shot in the left forearm in the incident and taken to Pennsylvania Presbyterian Medical Center, where he is also listed in stable condition, according to police.

No arrests have been made so far and no weapons have been recovered by police at the scene.

So far this year, homicides in Philadelphia exceed last year’s figures, according to police records. Philadelphia hit its 300th homicide of the year in July for the first time in more than three decades, according to available online records dating back to 1989.

In addition, the city has seen nearly 1,200 shootings this year, up from 938 in the same period last year, according to data up to July 12.

Washington DC

Three people were injured in a shootout on Saturday night outside of Nationals Park in Washington, DC, sending fans and baseball players to scramble during a game, police said.

A fan outside the stadium was one of three people injured, according to Ashan Benedict, executive deputy chief of police for the DC Metropolitan Police Department. The fan, an unidentified woman, was waiting for an Uber when she saw what appeared to be a person pulling at a vehicle, according to a police report.

CNN reporters inside the stadium reported hearing several loud bangs late in the 6th inning during a game between the Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres. Fans fled their seats and sought refuge after hearing the gunshots. Benoît said there was ultimately no threat to people inside the stadium.

“I just want to assure the public that at no point during this incident were individuals inside the stadium watching the game in danger. This was not an active shooter incident and it does not under investigation as such. Everything took place outside the stadium, “he said.

Benedict told reporters that two vehicles were involved in a “shootout” on a street outside the stadium during the match. Police recovered one of the vehicles, but the other is still at large.

Separately, on Friday night, a 6-year-old girl was killed and five adults were injured in a drive-by shooting in Washington, officials said. The incident occurred shortly after 11 p.m. in the southeastern part of the district.

In a video posted by DC Police, a silver or gray vehicle can be seen driving through the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE and Malcom X Avenue SE, and several shots are fired from the car.

The child has been identified as Nyiah Courtney, according to Metropolitan Police Department chief Robert Contee. In addition, three men and two women were shot dead and sustained non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Portland, Oregon

Police are investigating a shooting that occurred on the night of Saturday, July 17 in Portland, Oregon.
A woman died and six other people were injured in a shooting in downtown Portland, Oregon early Saturday, according to the Portland Police Department.

The victims were taken by ambulance to a hospital where the woman died, police said in a statement on Saturday.

The other six victims suffered injuries of varying degrees of severity, although the injuries were not considered life threatening, police said. Officers did not locate any suspects and no arrests were made, police said.

Two people were killed and four others injured in a shooting in Sacramento Friday night, according to a press release from the Sacramento Police Department.

The two deceased victims are both believed to be adult males, police said, but the Sacramento County coroner’s office has not released their identities.

Officers patrolling the area heard gunshots in Old Sacramento shortly before 11:45 p.m. Friday, police said. Agents from nearby agencies and across the city responded to the call, police said. Police said the other four victims were treated for their “non-life threatening injuries” at nearby hospitals.

Although the investigation is still in its early stages and a motive is unclear, the police department said “there was some sort of altercation between two groups before the shooting” and that “several firearms” were found at the scene.

The SPD did not release any suspicious information, but what happened “is considered an isolated incident”, according to police.
