Louisville Kentucky Derby Shows Include Kevin Gates, Janet Jackson

Several high-profile entertainers and entertainment options are coming to Louisville communities in the days leading up to the 2022 Kentucky Derby.

Talent for upcoming events in the city hosted by ASM Global, a venue management and services company, will include Janet Jackson, Kevin Gates and the Isley Brothers, a teen gospel group turned funky rock band with more 50 years in show business.

In addition to the ticketed events, the company will host several events for “people who don’t go to the Derby but still want to be part of the festivities and all the fun and excitement” of the annual show, said Sandra Moran, chief marketing officer. of the ASM. Global in Louisville.

On Saturday, ASM Global will host Derby City Reunion Weekend, a family and community event focused on health and wellness. The event will have appearances from Lamar Jackson and Teddy Bridgewater, both NFL quarterbacks who previously played at the University of Louisville.

Along with games and skill challenges, there will be “lots of resources and health screenings and that kind of stuff will be available for kids and adults as well,” Moran said.

“Everyone is welcome, but it’s really good for this underserved community, the neighborhood of Russell where it’s located,” Moran said. “A lot of kids, young people from the west side of Louisville, will be participating in this event.”

The launch of ASM Global events will also include some firsts for a few venues.

On May 4, the Louisville Urban League Derby Gala will feature a performance by the Isley Brothers at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center, marking the first concert ever held at the facility, according to Moran. The huge athletics complex opened last February in the West End, with officials at the time saying concerts and other community events could eventually take place at the facility.

On May 7, after the Kentucky Derby takes place at Churchill Downs, Janet Jackson and New Edition will perform at Lynn Family Stadium, Moran said. This will be the first concert to take place at the 11,700-seat Butchertown football stadium, which hosts games for Louisville City FC and Racing Louisville FC.

Following the Isley Brothers at the Gala, a black-tie fundraiser for the Louisville Urban League, rapper Kevin Gates will perform May 7 after the Derby at the Norton Healthcare Sports & Learning Center. This will mark the first concert-only event, Moran said.

The facility is primarily an athletics venue, Moran said, but “it’s unique for hosting concerts. It’s built to host concerts.”

The KFC Yum Center will also host Art Beats + Lyrics, a traveling arts and music event, on May 7. Art Beats + Lyrics is free for the community.

Hip-hop artists will set up halls around the downtown arena, and bars will also be set up, Moran said.

“It’s more of an after party. After you go to the Derby, you can kind of come here and hang out,” she added.

The 2022 showcase marks the most events ASM Global has ever staged during Derby week, Moran said, and all three gigs have local promoters, which is “unheard of in our market”.
