Horror movie sequel finds new streaming audience

Stephen King’s terrifying novel THIS caught readers’ attention in 1986. Pennywise’s story then shocked viewers in 1990. For decades, fans have associated the cosmic clown with Tim Curry’s iconic performance. Then, in 2017, everything changed – actor Bill Skarsgård helped recreate the character for IT: Chapter 1 and its sequel 2019 IT: Chapter 2. The duology told a whole new take on Stephen King’s novel for modern audiences. The 2017 film was a big hit and helped introduce a slew of new Stephen King adaptations. Unfortunately, IT: Chapter 2 was a little less successful, although it seems to have found a new audience on streaming.

As revealed via FlixPatrol, IT: Chapter 2 climbed to the top of the HBO Max streaming platform. In fact, at the time of this writing, it has reached No. 6 on HBO’s Top 10 Most-Watched Movies Worldwide. This placed IT: Chapter 2 above films such as Sing 2 and the Harry Potter spin off Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets. So with that in mind, it’s clear that Pennywise is still a fan favorite – especially if it has the power to beat most other movies on the platform.

It’s always fun to see which films might return to streaming platforms. We’ve seen plenty of cult classics or underrated movies find new audiences through streaming. And, because of this, new fans are created every day. Whereas IT: Chapter 2 wasn’t as successful as its predecessor, neither with viewers nor at the box office, it still did pretty well. But this new hit on HBO Max proves there’s still a much larger audience for IT: Chapter 2 while waiting to discover the thrilling adaptation of Stephen King.

That’s good too, because IT: Chapter 2 isn’t exactly the end for Pennywise. There’s actually a new prequel series reportedly in the works. This new series, titled Welcome to Derby, is set to air on HBO Max. It’s meant to be a prequel to the original film and further reveal Pennywise the Clown’s origins. Hopefully we will have more updates on this project soon.

In the meantime, however, it seems like the perfect time to revisit IT: Chapter 2 on HBO Max. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the THIS franchise or any other exciting work of Stephen King.
