BOSTON (CBS) – Boston Symphony Hall reopens to the public for the first time in 18 months.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra celebrated the occasion with a free Sunday concert titled “Concert for our City: Reunited at Symphony Hall,” a program featuring Lockhart and other BSO conductors including Andris Nelsons, Thomas Wilkins and John Williams.

“We had 2,000 people from across the spectrum of our Boston audience and they seemed so excited to be here. It was really kind of a love party, ”Lockhart said.

Since March 2020, the BSO has been taking the stage at Symphony Hall to perform virtually, but orchestra members admit nothing beats an in-person audience.

Cynthia Meyers plays piccolo in the BSO. She has been a member of the orchestra since 2006.

“They are not passive listeners. They are active listeners. And we react to them, and they react to us. It’s just that it’s so great to have everyone back, I can’t even begin to tell you that. It’s really awesome, ”Meyers said.

“We did a whole virtual season that was filmed entirely here, but there’s always something missing without the audience,” Lockhart said. “Live performance is above all a question of connection. “

Security protocols in place require spectators to wear a mask and present either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test to enter the venue. Full details on security protocols can be found on their website.

“Everyone came in with a smile on their face and everyone left with a smile on their face. We look forward to a drop in live music creation at Symphony Hall with all of our COVID protocols in place, ”said Lockhart.
